I want to thank everyone who took the time to give their pledges for this year's 2011 Terry Fox event. Roy, Alex and I just got back from taking part!
My good friend and running instructor Jo kindly lent me her Terry Fox book a week ago so I could read his story and get inspired. I knew a bit about Terry Fox but will admit, not as much as I know now after having read this book. Reading what Terry went through, why he did this, and all the challenges he faced makes me proud to be a Canadian and to be taking part in his legacy to raise funds for cancer research. As the author repeatedly quoted, Terry didn't do this to become famous. The run was never about him. The run was to bring awareness of cancer, how anyone can get cancer and how we need to help each other in beating this disease.
Along with the book Jo also lent me her Terry Fox commemorative loonie which I kept in my pocket this afternoon. It meant a great deal to be carry this with me, as it reminded me of the people I am doing this for. Thank you so much Jo.
Last year Roy, Allison and I walked the length of the Confederation Bridge which was a long stretch for my 5 year old. This year we took our bikes on the trail. Alex biked an entire 5 kms before his legs got tired. From there I left my bike on the trail while Roy and I took turns piggy backing Alex to the waterfront. All in all we cycled, ran and walked 10 kms (15 if you count that I had to go back and get my bike!) :)
The weather was beautiful for the event and I'm so glad we got to do this. It meant more having Roy and Alex there with me. Allison was off with her friend Jenna seeing the corn maze in Belfast. Hopefully next year she will join us as well. :)
Thank you once again to everyone who showed their support!
