A friend of mine shared a link to this ABC news story with me today and I can barely believe what I watched. Have we seriously gone this far? Are people really that desperate to lose weight? It'd be a cold day in hell before I'd take it this far! I can't embed the actual ABC video but I linked one from YouTube below. The Hyperlink for the ABC video is also included:
The diet has gained popularity among brides to be that are looking to lose 10-15 lbs before their wedding day. The process involves inserting a feeding tube through their noses, for up to 10 days. Over the course of up to 10 days, they are fed a protein+fat solution of 800 calories which the experts "claim" keeps their patients from feeling hungry. There are zero carbs and the video talks about going into ketosis. Think Atkins. The side effects listed are bad breathe and constipation due to a lack of fibre.
Umm hello? How about the side effect of having a friggin feeding tube stuck through your nose for 10 days and carrying around a little feeding bag to keep you nourished. This is CRAZY. They interviewed a bride who said "I don't have an hour and a half a day to workout to lose the weight before my wedding." It's not all about working out - try cleaning up your diet too.
This seriously worries me. My daughter is 9 years old. What message are we sending girls that want to get ready for prom? Their own weddings? That it's okay to resort to extreme measures to lose weight?
Seriously shaking my head here.
