33...maybe even 34 years ago, I remember living in our apartment on Spring Park Road and being excited for Santa Claus to come. Our apartment kitchen had cupboards that didn't touch the ceiling so you could store things on top of them if you wanted to. I remember I'd usually push one of our old chrome chairs over to the counter to hop up and get a plastic bowl or glass. One year I remember doing this as a kid and spotting a brown paper bag that had a toy in it! I remember peaking in the bag and seeing this tiny toy computer. I was so excited but I didn't dare tell my parents because I didn't want to get in trouble. Even at that age I must have known it was my Christmas gift.
I remember waking up on Christmas Day and finding the little toy computer under the tree. Mom and Dad said it was a gift from Santa Claus and I remember getting REALLY excited because I thought "Now I have TWO computers" and went running to the kitchen to find the one that was hidden earlier. Imagine my surprise when it was gone. ;) If I remember correctly, Mom and Dad later told me that Santa had to hide things because there wasn't always enough room in his sleigh. Seemed like a reasonable answer to me! LOL
This week Charlie, Dad and I went to Bibles for Missions to look for second hand books. I love going there because you can get a hard cover book for $2 and when I'm done I can pay it forward or return to the store for someone else to enjoy. We ended up wandering around the toy section and low and behold I found the same little toy computer I had when I was 4.5 years old. I showed it to Dad and asked if he remembered me getting it. He said he did and I just laughed telling him about how I found it early and thought I was getting two. I tried playing with the toy to see if it still worked but it appeared to be broken. I left it on the shelf and kept going.
When I got back home I kicked myself for not buying the little computer. So what if it was broken? It held memories. Who knows...maybe it was even my old toy passed down a hundred times? I went back to Bibles for Missions yesterday but was disappointed to find it was gone. I racked it up to a lesson learned, left the store and proceeded to get the rest of our shopping done for the day. On our way home we stopped by Dad's to check on him. I laughed and told him how I went back for the toy computer but someone else had already bought it. "I can't believe someone bought a broken toy in less than 24 hours. That's what I get for leaving it there." Dad just said "Oh yeah? Go look on my kitchen counter over there." I went over and there it was - the toy computer. My Dad went back to get it for me. 33 years later and I'm getting my first computer all over again. :) I was so happy you'd swear someone gave me a million dollars. Of course, Jonathan proceeded to say it was his toy and asked to play with it. I told him he could and guess what? He was able to get it working. I think it was seized up from not being played with for so long but we were able to make it work again. I'm so happy and will cherish this present forever. :)
I guess I was always destined to be a computer nerd. ;)
Thanks Dad!! xoxoxo
