This blog post goes out to Greg who asked me to extend my calorie burn research from last week’s post where I compared calorie burns using my treadmill. This week Greg wanted to know how the calorie burn reported on the Kinect compared to the BodyBugg and Polar Heart rate Monitor.
Thanks for the great question Greg!
Activity Selected
- Kinect Your Shape Fitness Evolved video game
Length of Activity
- 16 minutes, 26 seconds (child emergency short workout)
Calorie Monitors Used
- Kinect calorie monitor built into the Your Shape Fitness Evolved game
- Polar F6 Heart Rate Monitor
- BodyBugg
Observations
The Polar F6 Heart Rate Monitor and the Kinect were pretty much in synch at the beginning but quickly started to drift off once the pace of the workouts picked up. The Heart Rate monitor was reporting a higher burn than the Kinect. I assumed this has to do with the stopping and starting of the workouts on the video game but as the data below will show, the BodyBugg and Kinect were very close. A mere 9 calorie difference being reported.
Results
| BodyBugg | 100 calories |
| Kinect | 91 calories |
| Polar HRM | 136 calories |
Conclusion and Opinion
I believe all three monitoring tools were very close. As you can see the Kinect and Bodybugg were pretty much dead on. 100 calories versus 91 calories. I’m a little surprised the watch reported higher but overall I feel it’s close enough. In the end, it’s up to you what you decide to use. :)

Awesome!
Thanks Kim!
